Description
maxuta_id="016644" APOLLO-SOYUZ DOCKING: ANDREY SOKOLOV 14x10 OIL PAINTING It's offered to your attention the originally oil-painted picture "Apollo-Soyuz docking" by the famous Soviet "space artist" Andrey Sokolov, originally hand-signed by him with his name and the picture name on the back side with the pencil, 14x10" size. Painted on strong cardboard, this beautiful space art could be the perfect gift to any "space art" lover or just a decoration. Andrey Sokolov can be reghtly called the dean of Soviet space art. This enormously prolific and influental artist had been active for decades in promoting the recognition of space art both in his own country and abroad. He worked closely with the cosmonauts, particulary with his friend cosmonaut Alexey Leonov, and had visited the Baikonur launch facility many times. Sokolov was born in 1931 and studied art at the Moscow Architectural Institute. He was the member of the USSR Artist Union where he was chairman of the Cosmic Group. He had hel numerous exhibitions both in the Soviet Union and abroad, including the U.S., West Germany, Holland and Japan. He was active internationally in the promotion of both space art and interest in space exploration. His art work had been published in many American books and magazines, including Air and Space, and in seven books of his own (some done in collaboration with Alexey Leonov). He was the every of most space artists in having the active cooperation of cosmonauts in the creation of his art work. Sokolov prepared a sketch of some region on Earth that he knew a cosmonaut crew would be passing over while in orbit. Using his vast and expert knowledge of light, color, perspective, and geography, he tried to depict what the cosmonauts would see as accurately as he could. Those sketches were done on a light, flexible cloth that can be rolled or folded. On space left for the purpose, the cosmonauts were able to make notes, comparing Sokolov's view with reality. Using these critiques, Sokolov was able to render his final painting with great accuracy. "Space exploration", said Sokolov, "is the most impressive achievement of mankind; it's the forefront of human knowledge. The chief and only theme of my artistic activity in space, the Universe, and cosmonautics." Some of his most famous paintings were used for the Soviet postal stamps. Andrey Sokolov died in spring 2007 and now some of his famous "space art" become available for sale. Russian Space art lovers and serious collectors are welcome!
