DeMerit, 29th Wisconsin, 8p. quarto, ink, Camp Salomon, Mississippi, opposite of Helena, Arkansas, November 9, 1862, and reads in part: "...Boats are frequently fired into on the river but we did not get a gun...Thurs morning we reached Helena Arkansas which is about ninety miles south of Memphis and 300 north of Vicksburg. The authorities at Helena gave us leave to encamp with them at Helena or on the east bank opposite and our officers decided to go alone upon the east bank, as there was about 15000 troops at H. and the camping facilities appeared to be better....There seems to be around us only guerillas and their number perhaps 300. They have not disturbed our pickets yet or caused us any damage. They shot three of the pickets who were guarding the grounds before we came. On the whole I think we have been very lucky for we have not lost a man since we left the State of Wis....The expedition was much like a plundering party. It was conducted wrongly. The captain who led the men & the boys were too fast. Without order & in haste they lit on the man and his plantation as a hawk pounces on a chicken. They rushed into the house & began to strip it of everything. Some of the more considerable officers checked the bogs but it was not much short of a plundering party. Many things were taken by the boys & pocketed which never came into the Q.M. Department. What made the matter worse it turned out the man had a certificate from the General commanding here showing he was Union man & under the protection of the government. There was also about 30 bushels of corn taken at the same time...." with postwar note on verso stating "the planter who was plundered was a Mr. Powell whom they brot in as a prisoner & with a prominent southern man who has since been in Congress..."
