Description New Page 1 Up for auction is an original 1960's APOLLO HEAT SHIELD BLOCK. I am selling this for the heirs of a gentleman who used to work for North American Aviation, who along with the AVCO corporation, developed the heat shield for NASA to use in their Apollo space program. It is hard to believe that such a light weight material is able to withstand heat up to 20,000 degrees F. There is a small metal plate attached to the front describing what it is: Test Block from Heat Shield of Apollo Command Module 1966. In the bottom left hand corner is stamped in black: AVCOAT - 5026-39 H CCG - G6-80051-21  May 1966. There is a small chip in the block along the bottom edge (see picture). Along with the block is a copy of the 1966 SKYLINE magazine published by North American for their employees describing the heat shield and how it came to be. The original publication is in the possession of the heirs. The block measures 6" long, 1 1/4" deep and 2 3/8" high. It is in the form of a small name plate and would look great displayed on your desk or shelf! I will be listing a piece of the insulation that was also used in the Apollo space program so you might want to check out my other auctions. Shipments can be combined.
